Dial Post is situated in the parish of West Grinstead, south of Southwater, and stands on part of the old A24. It is often regarded as a hamlet or settlement. Dating back to 1702 and the place first noted was Dial Post Farme. The name, Dial Post, possibly refers to a post supporting a sundial - in those days one of the only means of telling the time. The upgrading of the A24 isolated this curiously named hamlet. A mile away is the remains of a motte and bailey castle - known as Knepp Castle.
